A new state-of-the-art colonoscopy procedure, referred to as "virtual colonoscopy," is now available for the first time in the Lehigh Valley at HealthDetect. A service of Cedar Crest EmergiCenter, HealthDetect is the only freestanding imaging center offering this specialized scanning procedure. Next day scheduling is normally available.
Both conventional and virtual colonoscopies are recommended for the evaluation of changes in bowel habits, unexplained diarrhea, constipation or abdominal pain, blood in stools, colon polyps, cancer or unexplained anemia or a family history of cancer. A negative aspect of the virtual colonoscopy is that if a problem is found, the patient may have to undergo conventional colonoscopy for treatment of the condition. Colonoscopies are highly recommended as a preventive screening tool for anyone over the age of fifty, as well as younger people with a family history of colorectal cancer. Many people avoid these screenings because they are embarrassed or afraid of invasive tests. The use of virtual colonoscopy can ease these fears and increase early detection. Colorectal cancer is the second most common cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States among men and women combined. 130,200 Americans will be diagnosed this year with colorectal cancer, while 56,300 will die from the disease. Up to two-thirds of these deaths are preventable with simple screening and prevention methods. Virtual colonoscopy requires a doctor's referral in order for the procedure to be covered by insurance. Results are sent to the patient's doctor. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 7 p.m. HealthDetect also offers the only Cardiac Scoring program in the Lehigh Valley for noninvasive early detection of coronary artery disease. |
